Illegal US torture camps

Oxford think tank calls for independent inquiry and firm action by the EU

(Oxford, 15 November 2005) Following recent claims by the Washington Post on 2 November 2005 and Human Rights Watch on 3 November 2005 that several Eastern European countries, possibly including Poland and Romania, are or have been hosting secret US facilities that are part of a global US detention and interrogation system which deliberately and consistently breaches international law and violates human rights, the EU should immediately set up an Independent Inquiry Commission with all necessary powers to fully investigate the allegations, which if found true should lead to severe sanctions against member states, termination of the accession processes for candidate countries, and prosecution and trial of responsible and implicated individuals.
