Hans Blix

Member, Board of Advisors

Dr Hans Blix was the Executive Chairman of the UN Monitoring, Verification, and Inspection Commission (UNMOVIC) that conducted weapons inspections in Iraq. He is currently the Chairman of the Weapons of Mass Destruction Commission.

Dr Blix was born on June 28 in 1928 in Uppsala in Sweden. He studied at the University of Uppsala, was a research graduate at Columbia University, received a PhD from Cambridge University, and received a Doctor of Laws at Stockholm University in 1959. He was appointed Associate Professor in International Law in 1960.

Dr Blix was Head of Department at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and served as Legal Adviser on International Law from 1963 to 1976. He was Under-Secretary of State at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, in charge of international development cooperation, from 1976 to 1978. He was Minister for Foreign Affairs from 1978 to 1979. He was a member of Sweden’s delegations to the United Nations General Assembly in New York from 1961 to 1981 and to the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva from 1962 to 1978.

Dr Blix was the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency from 1981 to 1997.

Dr Blix was appointed Executive Chairman of the UN Monitoring, Verification, and Inspection Commission (UNMOVIC) by UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan in January 2000, took up his duties in March 2000, and served in this position until June 2003.

Dr Blix has written several books on subjects associated with international and constitutional law. Disarming Iraq was published in 2004.

Dr Blix received an Honorary Doctorate from Moscow State University in 1987, received the Henry de Wolf Smyth Award in 1988, and became a Commander of the Legion of Honour in 2004.
