Board of Advisors

The Board of Advisors of the OCGG helps the Board of Directors in providing strategic direction and intellectual guidance to the Council.

 

Margot Wallström

Member, Board of Advisors

Ms Wallström is the European Commissioner for Institutional Relations and Communication Strategy and the First Vice President of the European Commission. She was previously the European Commissioner for the Environment.

Ms Wallström was born in Sweden on 28 September 1954. She is married and has two children. She graduated from high school in 1973.

Ms Wallström was the ombudsman of the Swedish Social Democratic Youth League from 1974 to 1977. She was an accountant at the Alfa Savings Bank in Karlstad from 1977 to 1979.

Ms Wallström was a Member of Parliament from 1979 to 1985. She was a senior accountant at the Alfa Savings Bank in Karlstad from 1986 to 1987.

Ms Wallström was Minister of Civil Affairs (Consumer Affairs, Women, and Youth) from 1988 to 1991. She was the CEO of TV Värmland (a regional television network) from 1993 to 1994.

Ms Wallström has been a Member of the Executive Committee of the Swedish Social Democratic Party from 1993. She was Minister of Culture from 1994 to 1996 and Minister of Social Affairs from 1996 to 1998. She was Executive Vice-president of Worldview Global Media in Colombo in Sri Lanka from 1998 to 1999.

Ms Wallström became European Commissioner for the Environment in 1999.

Ms Wallström was awarded an honorary doctorate from Chalmers University in Sweden in 2001. She was selected European Commissioner of the Year by European Voice in 2002. She won the Global Environmental Award from the International Association for Impact Assessment in 2004. She was awarded an honorary doctorate from Mälardalen University in Sweden in 2004.

Ms Wallström is the co-author of The People’s Europe or Why Is It So Hard To Love the EU? (2004) with Göran Färm.
